We may replace this site. We toyed with the idea of getting rid of this old Website server model and just move all the static objects (pictures, text) to a JAMSTACK - with static images on CDN and replace all the dynamic stuff (panoramas, timelines) as API's to various external framework services without bothering the server too much. It means we could host the site in github and just move the connections around to new webhosts without too much bother. But that would take a lot of time, which we don't have a lot of these days.

We've been looking to move our webhosts back to the UK, since we've hosted from Canada for a while and now Sweden. But the costs for webhosting are still much higher, thanks to data residency guarantees, Energy costs, local support centres, VAT and Business tax, NI rates, etc. These all get passed down to custmers and make the cost prohibative. We took a look at so many hosts from Leeds, Manchester to London and ended up sticking with our host in Stockholm, since the support is excellent.

We find its cheaper to pay a company in Stokholm which we can then bounce through a Cloud distriubution network to a Manchester Datacentre than it is to pay a company in Manchester to just do it. Our Domain and DNS servers are hosted in Florida. In fact, we could rent a server from 1byte.com in Thailand if I wanted to or even a raspberry Pi in the meter cupboard!

Personally, I don't know if such town websites are used any more. Since everyone uses social media and folks over 50 prefer to use 'friendface' (to quote the IT Crowd) ;-)
